Common use

Videx EC (didanosine) is prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection, usually in combination with other antiretroviral medications. It works as a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), blocking the action of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme critical for HIV replication, thereby slowing the progression of the infection.

Dosage and direction

Videx EC is taken orally, usually once daily on an empty stomach, either one hour before or two hours after meals. Swallow tablets or capsules whole; do not crush or chew. Dosage is based on body weight, age, kidney function, and other medications.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have pancreatitis, liver disease, kidney problems, diabetes, or a history of lactic acidosis. Regular monitoring of blood counts, liver, and kidney function is recommended. Avoid alcohol, as it may increase the risk of liver toxicity.

Contraindications

Do not use Videx EC if allergic to didanosine or any component of the formulation. It is contraindicated in patients with a history of pancreatitis related to didanosine.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, headache, and fatigue. Serious side effects may include pancreatitis, lactic acidosis, liver problems, peripheral neuropathy, or severe allergic reactions. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

Videx EC may interact with allopurinol, ganciclovir, stavudine, or other medications affecting liver or kidney function. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter products, and supplements you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, but do not take extra doses to make up for a missed one. Continue with your regular schedule.

Overdose

Overdose may cause severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, lactic acidosis, or pancreatitis. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Videx EC at room temperature, away from moisture, heat, and light. Keep the medication in its original container and out of reach of children.
