Common use

This combination is prescribed for the treatment of HIV-1 infection as part of combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) and for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection in high-risk individuals. Tenofovir and emtricitabine are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that block the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, reducing viral replication and viral load.

Dosage and direction

Typically taken once daily with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole. The dosage is determined by the healthcare provider based on whether the medication is used for treatment or prevention. Regular monitoring of kidney function and HIV viral load is recommended.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, osteoporosis, or a history of lactic acidosis. Stay hydrated and report any unusual muscle pain, weakness, or bone pain. Do not discontinue therapy without consulting your healthcare provider.

Contraindications

Do not use if allergic to tenofovir, emtricitabine, or any tablet components. Use cautiously in patients with severe kidney impairment or significant liver disease.

Possible side effect

Common side effects include headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, and mild rash. Serious side effects may include kidney toxicity, lactic acidosis, severe liver problems, or bone density loss. Seek medical attention if severe symptoms occur.

Drug interaction

May interact with other nephrotoxic drugs, didanosine, NSAIDs, certain antivirals, and other medications affecting kidney function. Always inform your doctor about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you are taking.

Missed dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Overdose may cause nausea, vomiting, fatigue, or kidney problems. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store at room temperature, protected from moisture, heat, and light. Keep in original packaging and out of reach of children.
